Introduction
Vitamin A was the first vitamin to be discovered (the source of the 'A' designation), identified in 1913 through dietary deficiency studies in rats and chemically characterized through the 1930s.
Industrial production proceeds by chemical synthesis from beta-ionone through a multi-step pathway, yielding all-trans retinol which is then esterified to either retinyl acetate (more stable, feed-grade workhorse) or retinyl palmitate (preferred for food fortification due to milder taste).
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed in BP, USP, EP, and JP pharmacopoeias. Recommended Dietary Allowance is 700 to 900 micrograms RAE per day for adults.
