Pantothenic acid was discovered in 1933 (the name derives from Greek pantothen meaning 'from everywhere', reflecting the vitamin's wide distribution in foods). The compound is essential for biosynthesis of coenzyme A, which itself participates in approximately 4 percent of all cellular enzyme reactions.
Industrial production proceeds by chemical synthesis: condensation of pantolactone with calcium beta-alaninate, with the natural D-enantiomer specifically produced through asymmetric synthesis or enzymatic resolution. The calcium salt is then crystallized for stability.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed in BP, USP, EP, and JP pharmacopoeias. Adequate Intake of 5 mg per day for adults.
The vitamin's biological function as the precursor to coenzyme A means deficiency is extremely rare in normal nutrition; the vitamin appears in essentially all foods at meaningful concentrations.
