01 — Overview

Description

The plant-source natural form of Vitamin K, essential for blood clotting and bone health. The dominant human-supplement and pharmaceutical form of Vitamin K, distinct from Vitamin K2 (bacterial-source menaquinones) and Vitamin K3 (synthetic feed-grade menadione).

Clear yellow to pale brown viscous oily liquid with characteristic odor. Light- and oxidation-sensitive; requires sealed protected packaging.

We supply food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade Vitamin K1 from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include Vitamin K1 Oil 96 percent or 98 percent purity (the pharmaceutical and supplement workhorse), Vitamin K1 Injectable Grade (sterile USP-grade for clinical use), Vitamin K1 1% in carrier (for dietary supplement gelcap manufacturing), and Vitamin K1 5% Microcapsules for dry fortification.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, related substances, optical rotation (cis/trans isomers), peroxide value, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Vitamin K1 was isolated from alfalfa in 1939 by Henrik Dam (the source of the 'K' designation, from German Koagulationsvitamin) and chemically characterized through the 1940s. The vitamin functions as an essential cofactor for the gamma-carboxylation enzymes that activate blood clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X.

Industrial production proceeds primarily by chemical synthesis combining phytol and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone, yielding the natural trans-isomer. The compound is then purified through chromatography or distillation to achieve pharmaceutical-grade purity.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed in BP, USP, EP, and JP pharmacopoeias. Adequate Intake is 90 to 120 micrograms per day for adults.

The vitamin's most universal clinical application is intramuscular administration to newborns within hours of birth, preventing Vitamin K deficiency bleeding in the first week of life. This is one of the most widely practiced preventive medical interventions globally, with virtually every newborn in regulated healthcare systems receiving Vitamin K1 prophylaxis.

Strategic positioning serves pharmaceutical clinical applications (the highest-priority use) and growing dietary supplement applications driven by interest in bone health and warfarin-management context. Volume is significantly lower than for the high-volume vitamins (C, B-complex, A, D, E), but unit value is correspondingly higher.

03 — Applications

Where it is used

  • Pharmaceutical applications: injectable Vitamin K1 for newborn hemorrhage prevention (administered to virtually every newborn globally), oral Vitamin K1 for warfarin reversal
  • Dietary supplements: standalone Vitamin K and bone-health multivitamin formulations
  • Infant formula fortification
  • Clinical nutrition and parenteral nutrition
  • Veterinary pharmaceutical applications including rodenticide-poisoning antidotes
  • Specialty fortified foods positioned for bone-health claims
  • Research and pharmaceutical-development applications
