Vitamin D3 was characterized in the 1930s following decades of research into rickets, the childhood bone-deformity disease that turned out to be caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Industrial production proceeds primarily through ultraviolet irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol (extracted from lanolin, the natural wool fat of sheep), converting it to cholecalciferol. Vegan D3 is produced by UV irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol from lichen sources rather than lanolin.
