Introduction
Vitamin D3 Resin is the direct product of industrial Vitamin D3 manufacture: 7-dehydrocholesterol (extracted from lanolin) is dissolved in suitable solvent and irradiated with ultraviolet light at controlled wavelength and intensity, opening the steroid B-ring to yield previtamin D3 which thermally rearranges to cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3).
The reaction mixture is then concentrated by solvent removal to yield the crude Vitamin D3 resin at 20 to 40 million IU/g potency. This crude concentrate contains Vitamin D3 alongside small amounts of related steroids (tachysterol, lumisterol, previtamin D3) that must be characterized for downstream processing.
Regulatory status follows that of pharmaceutical-grade Vitamin D3 (GRAS in the U.S., listed in major pharmacopoeias for the purified downstream products).
The resin is the upstream commercial intermediate for the entire Vitamin D3 industry. Most Vitamin D3 manufacturers purchase resin from a small number of UV-irradiation producers, then formulate to specific downstream product grades in-house.
Strategic positioning serves the vitamin-product manufacturing segment exclusively. End-user customers typically purchase the finished downstream products (oils, powders, crystalline) rather than the resin directly.
