01 — Overview

Description

Steam-distilled essential oil from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, the Australian tea tree. The dominant natural antimicrobial active in cosmetic acne, scalp, and body-care formulations, standardized on terpinen-4-ol content per ISO 4730.

Clear, colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid with a fresh, camphoraceous odor. Insoluble in water, fully soluble in ethanol and most cosmetic oils. Sensitive to oxidation, requiring antioxidant protection in finished formulations.

We supply cosmetic-grade Tea Tree Oil from manufacturers in China and Australia holding ISO 22716, ISO 9001, ISO 4730 (the international tea tree oil standard), Halal, Kosher, ECOCERT and COSMOS certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades are differentiated by terpinen-4-ol content and 1,8-cineole content per ISO 4730: Standard grade with 30 to 40 percent terpinen-4-ol and Premium grade with 40 to 48 percent terpinen-4-ol and below 5 percent 1,8-cineole. Organic-certified Australian material is also commercial at price premium.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering GC-MS terpene profile, peroxide value, refractive index, optical rotation, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Tea tree oil entered Western awareness in the 1920s through Australian researcher Arthur Penfold, who documented its antimicrobial activity exceeding that of phenol. Commercial production accelerated after World War II and tea tree oil became a global cosmetic and OTC ingredient through the 1990s and 2000s, supported by the establishment of the ISO 4730 standard.

Industrial production is by steam distillation of harvested Melaleuca alternifolia leaves and terminal branches. Distillation yields are 1 to 2 percent of fresh plant mass. Post-distillation, the oil is decanted, polish-filtered, and analyzed by GC-MS for the eight ISO 4730 marker compounds. Storage is under inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation.

Regulatory status is that of a listed cosmetic ingredient in CosIng, the PCPC INCI dictionary, and China IECIC. EU SCCS has reviewed tea tree oil and recommends finished-product use below 5 percent, with attention to oxidation control because oxidized tea tree oil shows higher skin sensitization potential. China's NMPA permits use as a cosmetic ingredient within standard cosmetic safety frameworks.

Clinical evidence is substantial. Peer-reviewed studies show 5 percent tea tree oil topical gel non-inferior to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide in mild-to-moderate acne over 12 weeks, with substantially better tolerance. Dandruff studies at 5 percent shampoo demonstrate efficacy comparable with ketoconazole at lower irritation.

Strategically, tea tree oil remains the dominant natural antimicrobial in the cosmetic category, anchoring the natural-acne, scalp-health, and clean-deodorant segments. Demand is steady and price is dominated by Australian supply with growing Chinese cultivation.
