Introduction
Royal jelly is the glandular secretion produced by nurse worker bees and fed to honeybee larvae, with continued feeding determining queen-bee development. Production has been industrialized in China since the 1950s, and the country accounts for the majority of global supply.
The compound 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid is unique to royal jelly and serves as the principal marker for authenticity and quality. Premium grades are standardized to 6 percent 10-HDA on a dry basis, with specialty material reaching 8 percent or higher.
Freeze-drying preserves the protein, enzyme, and vitamin fractions far better than spray-drying, which is why lyophilized material commands a premium in the nutraceutical channel. The principal handling consideration is moisture: royal jelly powder is hygroscopic and must be kept dry and cool to maintain 10-HDA stability.
