Introduction
Bee pollen has been collected for human consumption since antiquity and is documented in Chinese, Egyptian, and Greek texts. Modern apicultural use of pollen traps to harvest the granules without harming colonies developed during the twentieth century, principally in Eastern Europe and China.
The product is a true whole food rather than an extract: each granule consists of flower pollen agglomerated with nectar and bee enzymes. Composition varies meaningfully by floral source and region, with protein content ranging from approximately 10 to 35 percent on a dry-weight basis and the polyphenol profile reflecting local botanical mix.
Recognised as a traditional food ingredient by EFSA and by the relevant authorities in China, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Approved as a Health Food ingredient in China under specific monograph entries.
The principal commercial value propositions are nutrient density (the granules deliver a balanced spectrum of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals not typically found in any single plant food) and the polyphenol and flavonoid content delivered by the cargo nectar and bee secretions.
A small minority of consumers are allergic to bee pollen or to specific botanical pollens within a granule mix, and the allergy is genuine, occasionally severe, and labelable. Finished-product formulators include allergen warnings consistent with the rules applicable to other apicultural products.
