01 — Overview

Description

The citrate salt of trimethylglycine, combining the methyl-donor and osmoprotectant properties of betaine with the mild organic-acid action of citrate. Positioned between free betaine and Betaine HCl as a gentler acidifier suited to species and life stages where chloride load or stomach pH must be carefully managed.

White to off-white crystalline powder with high water solubility and a mildly sour taste profile. Citrate provides a softer pH transition than hydrochloride and contributes a tricarboxylic acid intermediate that supports energy metabolism in liver and muscle tissue.

We supply feed-grade and pharma-grade Betaine Citrate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, FAMI-QS, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include Feed Grade for animal nutrition, USP grade for veterinary and human supplement applications, and granular forms with low dust generation for premix automation.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, citrate content, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Betaine citrate is the salt formed between trimethylglycine and citric acid, available as monocitrate or as the more common 1:1 acid salt depending on manufacturer. Production proceeds by neutralization of citric acid solution with crystalline betaine, followed by crystallization, washing, and drying to feed-grade or pharma-grade purity.

The strategic case for the citrate form is the combination of mild acidification with metabolic value: citrate is itself a tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediate, absorbed and oxidized to support hepatic and muscular energy metabolism rather than excreted as the inert chloride load from Betaine HCl. The form is therefore preferred in liver-support and performance applications.

Regulatory acceptance follows the parent betaine framework in major feed markets, with citrate listed as a generally acceptable counter-ion in the EU and U.S. for the relevant feed-additive categorizations.

Typical inclusion is 500 to 1,500 grams per tonne in poultry and swine liver-support feed, 1,000 to 2,000 grams per tonne in equine supplements (per kilogram of premix), and 500 to 1,000 grams per tonne in broodstock aquaculture feed.

03 — Applications

Where it is used

  • Liver-support supplements for working dogs, sled dogs, and performance horses
  • Ornamental fish and koi feed where mild acidification supports digestion without chloride load
  • Layer feed to support liver methylation in high-production hens
  • Veterinary hepatoprotective premixes for dairy cattle in transition
  • Equine sports nutrition products combining methyl donor and Krebs-cycle intermediate
  • Companion-animal urinary-support supplements where citrate also serves a stone-management function
  • Aquaculture broodstock feed where reproductive performance is the target outcome
  • Calf-rearing milk replacers and pre-starter pellets
