Introduction
Betaine HCl is the equimolar salt of trimethylglycine and hydrochloric acid, manufactured by controlled neutralization of crystalline betaine with hydrochloric acid followed by crystallization and drying. The product carries both the methyl-donor and osmoprotectant biochemistry of free betaine and the acidifying capacity of an equivalent dose of HCl, delivered as a stable dry powder.
In monogastric digestion, the gastric environment of newly weaned pigs and shrimp post-larvae is incompletely developed, and ingested protein hydrolysis depends on adequate stomach or hepatopancreas acidification. Feed-grade Betaine HCl delivers a measured release of HCl on contact with digestive fluids, supporting pepsin activation in pigs and proteolytic enzyme function in shrimp without the handling hazards of free hydrochloric acid in feed mills.
Regulatory status as a feed ingredient is established in the EU, U.S., and most aquaculture-producing jurisdictions. The same molecule is widely sold in human dietary supplement markets as a digestive support nutraceutical, typically dosed at 250 to 750 mg per capsule.
Typical feed inclusion is 1,000 to 2,000 grams per tonne of piglet starter, 500 to 1,000 grams per tonne of broiler pre-starter, and 1,000 to 1,500 grams per tonne of shrimp nursery feed.
