Introduction
Evening primrose is a North American biennial herb introduced to Europe in the 17th century and now cultivated commercially in China, the United Kingdom, and Eastern Europe specifically for its GLA-rich seed oil.
The seed contains 17 to 25 percent oil by mass, of which 9 to 12 percent is GLA, depending on cultivar and growing conditions. Chinese production accounts for a significant share of global supply, concentrated in the northeast and northwest regions.
Seeds are cleaned, cold-pressed at controlled temperature, and the crude oil refined through alkali neutralization, bleaching, and steam deodorization to produce a clear, neutral-tasting finished oil.
Evening Primrose Oil has been used as a traditional medicinal preparation by indigenous North American peoples for centuries and has been clinically studied since the 1980s for atopic dermatitis, mastalgia, and PMS, with mixed results that nonetheless continue to support a substantial consumer supplement market.
Oxidative stability is moderate. Antioxidant fortification with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract is standard for softgel-grade material.
