Introduction
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, lingzhi in Chinese) is the most prominent medicinal mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine, classified in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior tonic herb. Modern research has identified two principal bioactive fractions: the polysaccharides (predominantly beta-glucans) and the triterpenoids (ganoderic acids).
Commercial beta-glucan extract is produced by hot-water extraction of dried fruiting body, followed by ethanol precipitation to concentrate the polysaccharide fraction. Further purification by ion-exchange or size-exclusion chromatography supports higher-purity grades for clinical and pharmaceutical use.
Standardization by Megazyme enzymatic assay (specific for beta-1,3 and beta-1,6 glucans) is the rigorous specification standard, distinguishing beta-glucan content from total polysaccharide measurements that include non-bioactive starch and other carbohydrates.
Mycelium-on-grain material is a lower-cost source widely used in mass-market mushroom products, but contains substantial starch from the grain substrate. Premium positioning typically specifies fruiting-body-only source material with mycelium content disclosed.
Regulatory framework recognizes reishi as a food and food supplement ingredient with long traditional use. Clinical claims related to immune support and oncology adjunctive use are subject to medical claim regulation in major markets.
