01 — Overview

Description

Algal Protein from chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris and C. pyrenoidosa) is a complete-protein microalgal ingredient delivering 60 to 70 percent protein on a dry basis along with native chlorophyll, carotenoids, and the chlorella-signature CGF (Chlorella Growth Factor) nucleotide-peptide complex.

Protein content of 60 to 70 percent (Kjeldahl, N x 6.25). Deep green free-flowing powder with characteristic algal flavor. Cell-wall-cracked grades are standard to support digestibility, addressing the historically poor digestibility of intact-wall chlorella.

The amino acid profile is complete with PDCAAS approaching 1.0, high lysine and BCAA content, and the full essential amino acid spectrum represented. The protein is accompanied by native vitamin B12 analogs, iron, magnesium, and a broad nutrient matrix that supports superfood positioning.

We supply food-grade Algal Protein from manufacturers in China holding ISO, HACCP, Halal, Kosher, organic-compliant and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include cell-wall-cracked chlorella powder (the dominant standard grade), tablet-grade chlorella, organic-certified chlorella from controlled photobioreactor or open-pond cultivation, and protein-enriched chlorella concentrates. Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering protein, chlorophyll, heavy metals (with particular attention to cadmium and lead given cultivation considerations), and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Chlorella has been cultivated as a commercial human food in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea since the 1960s and remains the world's most cultivated microalga by volume. The category expanded globally in the 2000s and 2010s with the rise of superfood and clean-label nutrition.

Manufacturing uses photoautotrophic cultivation in either open ponds or closed photobioreactors. The chlorella biomass is harvested by centrifugation, washed, and subjected to cell-wall cracking by mechanical (bead-mill) or thermal-pressure treatment to break the rigid cellulose-sporopollenin cell wall and release the protein and nutrient content. The cracked biomass is then spray-dried to fine powder.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA and regulated under EU novel food and microalgae frameworks. Chlorella vulgaris and pyrenoidosa have established histories of safe use as whole foods.

Amino acid quality positioning: complete protein with high lysine and BCAA content, comparable amino acid quality to high-grade animal proteins on a corrected basis. The accompanying micronutrient matrix (chlorophyll, carotenoids, B-vitamins, minerals) supports a whole-food superfood positioning that distinguishes algal protein from refined plant or animal isolates.

Strategic positioning: chlorella-based algal protein occupies the premium superfood and clean-label segment of the plant-protein market, valued for its complete amino acid profile, nutrient density, sustainability story (high protein yield per land area), and consumer recognition as a green superfood.
