02 — Background

Introduction

Yellow beeswax (Cera Flava) is the standard refined natural beeswax, distinguished from White Beeswax (Cera Alba) by retention of the natural pollen-derived yellow color. The chemistry is otherwise identical between the two grades.

Production starts with raw beeswax collected from apiaries after honey extraction. The wax is melted, filtered through fine mesh or clay, optionally treated with activated carbon to standardize color without complete decolorization, and pelletized or slab formed for commercial shipment.

Regulated as E901 in the EU, recognized as Generally Recognized as Safe by the U.S. FDA, and listed in USP, NF, EP, JP, and BP pharmacopoeias under the name Cera Flava.

Yellow beeswax remains the preferred grade for natural and organic cosmetic positioning, premium candle manufacture, and any finished product where the warm honey aroma and characteristic golden color contribute to the consumer proposition.
