Introduction
Pine bark extract reached commercial prominence in the 1960s and 1970s through French scientist Jack Masquelier's research on the proanthocyanidins he isolated from French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) bark. The branded Pycnogenol product subsequently dominated the premium pine bark supplement category for decades.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried pine bark followed by chromatographic enrichment. Premium Pinus pinaster-sourced material commands a substantial price premium over generic pine bark from other species.
The compound profile is dominated by procyanidins (catechin and epicatechin oligomers) alongside taxifolin, catechin monomer, and several characteristic organic acids. The profile is similar to grape seed extract (id 8403) but distinguished by the taxifolin component and somewhat different oligomer distribution.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in most jurisdictions. Clinical evidence base includes randomized controlled trials supporting effects on venous insufficiency, blood pressure, cognitive performance, and diabetic complications, primarily generated on the branded Pycnogenol product.
