Introduction

Functional mushrooms have a long history in traditional Chinese and East Asian medicine, with reishi, lion's mane, and cordyceps among the most widely studied for cognitive, immune, and adaptogenic effects.

The mushroom coffee category emerged in the 2010s as wellness-positioned brands combined the everyday ritual of coffee with the functional positioning of medicinal mushrooms, capturing growing consumer interest in functional foods.

The mushroom extracts used in these blends are typically dual-extracted (hot water and ethanol) to capture both water-soluble polysaccharides including beta-glucans and alcohol-soluble triterpenes. Standardization to beta-glucan content is increasingly common.

The reduced coffee content in many mushroom coffee blends, often around half of conventional instant coffee, supports positioning around smoother energy without the jittery effects associated with high caffeine consumption.
