The dehydrated, fully purified crystalline form of caffeine, the world's most consumed psychoactive ingredient and the active stimulant in energy drinks, colas, pre-workout formulas, and dietary supplements.

White to almost white crystalline powder or silky needle-like crystals with a bitter taste and characteristic melting point near 235 to 238 °C. Sparingly soluble in cold water and freely soluble in hot water and ethanol.

Caffeine was first isolated from coffee beans in 1819 by Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge at the request of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Industrial production today proceeds either by chemical synthesis from dimethylurea and malonic acid or by extraction from decaffeination of green coffee beans and tea waste.

The synthetic and naturally extracted forms are chemically identical: both yield 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine of equivalent purity. The choice between sources is governed almost entirely by labeling and marketing requirements rather than functional performance.

Regulated globally as a food ingredient with limits set per category: the EU caps caffeine in energy drinks at 320 mg per liter and requires the high-caffeine warning above that level, the U.S. FDA classifies caffeine as Generally Recognized as Safe in cola at up to 200 mg/kg and treats energy drinks under a dietary supplement framework, and Health Canada caps energy drinks at 180 mg per single serving.

Acceptable Daily Intake guidance from EFSA places single doses up to 200 mg and daily total up to 400 mg as not raising safety concerns for healthy adults, with lower limits for pregnant women and children.
