01 — Overview

Description

A high-phospholipid krill oil extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), standardized to a minimum 56% phospholipid content with phospholipid-bound EPA and DHA, and naturally occurring astaxanthin. Standard krill oil typically delivers 40% to 48% phospholipids; the high-phospholipid grade targets premium softgel and pharmaceutical positioning.

Deep red to red-brown viscous oil with a characteristic marine note. The defining structural feature is that more than half of the omega-3 fatty acids are esterified to phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine rather than triglycerides, a form associated with enhanced bioavailability and brain uptake.

We supply food-grade and supplement-grade High-Phospholipid Krill Oil from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher, MSC, and Friend of the Sea sustainable-fishery certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include 56% Phospholipid (premium), 60% Phospholipid (top-tier), 48% Phospholipid (standard premium), and 40% Phospholipid (cost-grade). Astaxanthin and EPA/DHA content scale broadly with phospholipid level.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering phospholipid content (P31-NMR), EPA, DHA, astaxanthin (HPLC), peroxide value, fluoride residue, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a small shrimp-like crustacean that forms one of the largest animal biomasses on Earth in the Southern Ocean. Krill feed on phytoplankton and accumulate omega-3 fatty acids esterified predominantly to phospholipids rather than triglycerides, a metabolic distinction that defines the commercial value of krill oil.

Commercial krill oil production is regulated by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which sets science-based catch limits that are a small fraction of the standing biomass. Sustainability certification by MSC and Friend of the Sea is standard among the leading krill harvesters.

Onboard processing is critical because krill carry powerful endogenous lipases and proteases that rapidly degrade the oil after harvest. The catch is cooked, dewatered, and either solvent-extracted onboard or processed into dried meal for shore-based extraction. The crude oil is then standardized in phospholipid content by removing or concentrating the polar lipid fraction.

Regulatory status is well established. Krill oil is an authorized Novel Food in the EU under multiple authorizations. The U.S. FDA recognizes krill oil as Generally Recognized as Safe under several notifications. China permits krill oil as a registered health food ingredient.

The high-phospholipid positioning targets the premium softgel segment. The bioavailability rationale is twofold: phospholipid-bound omega-3 is absorbed without requiring biliary emulsification, and phosphatidylcholine itself is a structural precursor to neuronal cell membranes. Premium product positioning also leverages the natural astaxanthin content, which provides both the characteristic deep red color and an antioxidant claim.
