01 — Overview

Description

Eucalyptus Oil is a food-grade essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh leaves of Eucalyptus globulus and related Eucalyptus species. The oil delivers a sharp, fresh, camphoraceous aroma dominated by 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), used in confectionery, cough drops, oral care, and respiratory pharmaceutical applications.

Colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid with a strong, fresh, camphoraceous aroma. Miscible with ethanol and fixed oils; sparingly soluble in water. 1,8-Cineole content typically ranges from 70 to 85 percent in food-grade material, with rectified oil reaching 80 to 99 percent for pharmaceutical use.

We supply food-grade Eucalyptus Oil from manufacturers and traders holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production. Standard, rectified, and pharmaceutical-grade specifications are available.

Common market grades include Standard Food Grade (70 to 85 percent cineole), Rectified 80/85 (80 to 85 percent), Pharmaceutical Grade Cineole 80/85 meeting EP and USP, and high-purity isolated Cineole 99 percent for specialty applications.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation, 1,8-cineole content by GC, aldehyde content, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Eucalyptus globulus is native to southeastern Australia and cultivated commercially in Australia, China, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and parts of South America. China and Australia are the largest commercial producers of food and pharmaceutical-grade eucalyptus oil.

Production proceeds by steam distillation of fresh leaves, yielding approximately 1 to 3 percent essential oil. The crude oil is typically rectified by vacuum distillation to remove aldehydes responsible for irritation and to standardize cineole content for pharmaceutical or food-grade specification.

Regulated as Generally Recognized as Safe by the U.S. FDA at flavor-use concentrations (21 CFR 182.20), assigned FEMA GRAS number 2466, listed in USP, EP, and BP pharmacopoeias, and approved by JECFA as a flavoring agent. The European Medicines Agency recognizes eucalyptus oil for respiratory therapeutic use.

Principal aroma compounds are 1,8-cineole (70 to 85 percent in food grade, up to 99 percent in rectified pharmaceutical grade), alpha-pinene (5 to 14 percent), and limonene (1 to 6 percent). Aldehyde content is the critical pharmaceutical quality marker, with rectification reducing aldehydes to below 0.5 percent.

Strategic positioning sits at the boundary of food flavor and respiratory pharmaceutical use. The same molecule serves both as a confectionery and oral-care flavor at low dosage and as a pharmacologically active ingredient in cough and chest-rub products at therapeutic dosage.
