Date Sugar

A whole-food natural sweetener produced by drying and grinding pitted dates, predominantly the Deglet Noor and Medjool varieties. Sweeter than sucrose by weight and carrying the full nutritional profile of whole dates, including fiber, potassium, magnesium, and polyphenol antioxidants.

Light to medium brown free-flowing granules. Does not fully dissolve in water; instead it disperses, which limits use in beverage applications but suits baking, granola, and dry-blend formats well.

Date Sugar is one of the most ancient sweeteners known, produced in some form across the Middle East and North Africa for at least four thousand years. The modern packaged-retail product is a 20th-century development, scaled commercially in Israel, Tunisia, and California in the 1980s and 1990s, with expansion to broader natural-food retail in the 2000s.

Production is essentially a single mechanical operation. Dates are pitted, dried to approximately 3 percent moisture, ground, and sieved to the target particle size. No chemical processing, refining, or extraction is performed, which means the finished product retains essentially all of the fiber, minerals, and phenolic antioxidants of the source fruit.

Regulated as a food ingredient with no E-number. Considered a single-ingredient natural product in the United States, EU, and most Asian jurisdictions, with labeling typically as Date Sugar or Dried Date Powder.

The commercial positioning is the cleanest possible: a one-ingredient sweetener that is simply dried fruit, ground. It is not a calorie-reduced or glycemic-controlled sweetener; the sugar load is comparable to brown sugar on a weight basis. The differentiation lies in the whole-food positioning, the fiber and mineral contribution, and the absence of any refining step. The functional limitation is solubility: Date Sugar does not dissolve and is therefore unsuitable for clear beverages, syrups, and most candy applications. It excels in baking, bars, and dry-blend formats.
