Description
A standardized extract from European Bilberry fruit (Vaccinium myrtillus), the wild relative of cultivated blueberry. Standardized to anthocyanin content, the principal active polyphenol class. The dominant eye-health botanical supplement ingredient outside of Lutein, with established positioning for vision and microcirculation support.
Dark purple to black free-flowing powder. Highly water-soluble.
We supply food-grade Bilberry Extract from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.
Common market grades include 10 percent Anthocyanins (cost-effective baseline), 25 percent Anthocyanins (the supplement workhorse grade matching the Mirtoselect-style pharmaceutical standard), and 36 percent Anthocyanins (premium concentrated grade). 25 percent Anthocyanidins (the aglycone form, distinct from anthocyanins) is also offered as a separate specification.
Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering total anthocyanins (UV and HPLC), individual anthocyanin profile, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiology.
Introduction
Bilberry has been used in European folk medicine since at least the sixteenth century, with reports during World War II of British pilots consuming bilberry jam to support night vision. Modern pharmacological characterization of the bilberry anthocyanins began in the 1960s in Italy.
Industrial production proceeds by hydroalcoholic extraction of wild-harvested or cultivated bilberry fruit, followed by concentration, purification, and spray-drying to defined anthocyanin content. The bilberry anthocyanin profile contains fifteen distinct anthocyanins (versus the smaller profile of cultivated blueberry).
Bilberry preparations hold pharmacopoeial monograph status in EP and are regulated as OTC pharmaceuticals in some EU markets. The U.S. FDA recognizes bilberry as a permitted food ingredient.
Clinical evidence supports bilberry anthocyanins for microcirculation, including diabetic retinopathy and visual function in low-light conditions, with the strongest evidence base from Italian and Eastern European clinical programs using standardized 25 percent anthocyanin formats.
Strategic positioning targets eye-health dietary supplements (the dominant application), microcirculation and vascular-health supplements, and premium nutricosmetic formats.
