01 — Overview

Description

Roasted green tea (Camellia sinensis) processed into a fine powder, producing the characteristic toasted, caramel-like flavor profile of Japanese hojicha tea in a soluble dry format.

Light to medium brown free-flowing powder with characteristic toasty, slightly sweet aroma. The roasting process reduces caffeine relative to unroasted matcha while developing the distinctive nutty roasted flavor.

We supply food-grade Hojicha Powder from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include culinary grade for bakery and confectionery, beverage grade for hojicha lattes, premium grade from selected tea gardens, and organic-certified grades.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering moisture, particle size, caffeine content, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Hojicha originated in 1920s Kyoto, when tea merchants experimented with roasting older leaves, stems, and trimmings to create a more affordable and accessible tea. The result was a distinctively roasted profile that has since become a beloved category in its own right.

The roasting process transforms the flavor profile from green and grassy to toasted and caramelized, while simultaneously reducing caffeine content. This makes hojicha popular for evening consumption and for serving to children in Japan.

Hojicha powder extends this flavor profile into culinary and confectionery applications, where the toasted-caramel character pairs naturally with milk, chocolate, and brown sugar flavors in modern Japanese-influenced desserts.

The lower caffeine and milder flavor compared to matcha have positioned hojicha as a popular gateway tea for consumers exploring Japanese tea categories without committing to matcha's stronger flavor and higher caffeine content.
