01 — Overview

Description

The calcium salt of gluconic acid, the mineral form of choice where water solubility, neutral taste, and gentle gastric profile take priority over elemental payload. Elemental calcium fraction is approximately 9 percent, the lowest among major commercial calcium salts.

White odorless crystalline or granular powder, moderately soluble in water and freely soluble in boiling water. Neutral pH in solution and tasteless, supporting beverage and pediatric applications where calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate would impart chalkiness or sediment.

We supply food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade Calcium Gluconate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, FSSC 22000, Halal, Kosher, and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include Standard Food Grade (anhydrous and monohydrate), USP/EP/JP/BP Pharmaceutical Grade for oral and injectable use, and Calcium Lactate Gluconate, the highly soluble double-salt format used in fortified clear beverages. Fermentation-derived and chemically synthesized gluconic acid feedstocks are both available.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, calcium content, reducing substances, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Calcium Gluconate is the calcium salt of gluconic acid, a six-carbon sugar acid produced commercially by microbial fermentation of glucose using Aspergillus niger or Gluconobacter species. Industrial manufacture combines gluconic acid with calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate, followed by crystallization and drying to anhydrous or monohydrate form.

Regulated as E578 in the EU, classified as Generally Recognized as Safe by the U.S. FDA under 21 CFR 184.1199, listed in USP, EP, JP, and BP pharmacopoeias, and approved by JECFA without a numerical Acceptable Daily Intake limit. The injectable USP grade is one of the standard clinical treatments for severe hypocalcemia and an antidote to hyperkalemic cardiotoxicity.

Elemental calcium per unit mass is the lowest of any common calcium salt at approximately 9 percent. Calcium Carbonate delivers four times more elemental calcium per gram, and Calcium Citrate roughly twice. The trade-off purchased with lower payload is water solubility, neutral taste, and gentler gastric profile, all of which matter in pediatric, beverage, and parenteral applications where Calcium Carbonate cannot be used.

Bioavailability is high and largely independent of gastric acid, making Calcium Gluconate a preferred form in elderly patients, proton-pump inhibitor users, and clinical injectable therapy. The double-salt Calcium Lactate Gluconate further raises solubility roughly 60-fold compared to plain Calcium Gluconate and is the standard form for clear-beverage calcium fortification.

The strategic position is application-driven rather than cost-driven. Calcium Gluconate competes not on elemental calcium per dollar but on solubility, taste, and clinical compatibility, where competing forms cannot perform.

03 — Applications

Where it is used

  • Pediatric calcium supplements: oral solutions, syrups, and chewable tablets where neutral taste is required
  • Pharmaceutical injectable calcium for clinical treatment of hypocalcemia and as a hyperkalemia cardioprotectant
  • Effervescent calcium tablets and fortified drink powders
  • Calcium fortification of clear beverages, juices, and flavored waters
  • Functional foods and meal-replacement formulations
  • Animal feed mineral source where solubility supports premix uniformity
  • Cured-meat and dairy applications as a calcium source and firming agent
  • Pharmaceutical excipient and sequestrant in oral formulations
