01 — Overview

Description

The calcium salt form of cyclamic acid, approximately 30 to 40 times sweeter than sucrose. Chosen over the sodium salt by formulators seeking to reduce sodium content in finished products, particularly low-sodium beverages, dietetic foods, and renal-diet applications.

White crystalline powder. Highly water-soluble, stable through baking and retort, and fully compatible with acidic beverage matrices. Note that Calcium Cyclamate is banned in the United States but approved in over 50 countries including the EU, China, and most of Asia and Latin America.

We supply food-grade Calcium Cyclamate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include standard food-grade powder and fine-mesh material for tabletop sweetener blends and liquid concentrate manufacturing.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, cyclohexylamine residue, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Calcium Cyclamate was developed alongside Sodium Cyclamate in the late 1940s and 1950s by Abbott Laboratories as part of a family of cyclamate salt products. The calcium salt occupies a smaller share of the cyclamate market but serves a distinct formulation need where sodium contribution must be minimized.

Industrial production is by sulfonation of cyclohexylamine with sulfamic acid, followed by neutralization with calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate, crystallization, and drying. Final purity and impurity profile match the corresponding sodium salt.

Regulatory status mirrors Sodium Cyclamate: prohibited in the United States since 1970, approved in the EU under E952, and assigned an Acceptable Daily Intake of 11 mg per kg body weight expressed as cyclamic acid by JECFA. Approved in over 50 countries worldwide.

The calcium form delivers an additional calcium contribution at typical sweetener doses, which is occasionally leveraged as a minor mineral-fortification claim. More commonly, Calcium Cyclamate is specified by formulators developing low-sodium product platforms where every milligram of sodium counts toward the regulatory threshold for a low-sodium or reduced-sodium label claim.

03 — Applications

Where it is used

  • Low-sodium and reduced-sodium beverages where Sodium Cyclamate is unsuitable
  • Dietetic and medical-nutrition products including renal-diet formulations
  • Tabletop sweetener formats targeting low-sodium claims
  • Sugar-free confectionery, chewing gum, and lozenges in low-sodium product lines
  • Pharmaceutical syrups and chewable tablets where sodium load matters
  • Sugar-free dairy and frozen desserts in low-sodium product lines
  • Sugar-free baked goods for diabetic and low-sodium consumer segments
  • Co-formulation with calcium saccharin in calcium-fortified low-sodium sweetener blends
