Introduction
Acetyl L-Carnitine HCl (ALCAR HCl) is the hydrochloride salt of acetyl-L-carnitine, produced by acetylation of L-carnitine followed by hydrochloride salt formation. The acetyl group enables the molecule to cross the blood-brain barrier far more readily than free L-carnitine.
Industrial production starts from fermentation-derived L-carnitine, which is chemically acetylated and then converted to the hydrochloride salt by reaction with hydrochloric acid. The resulting salt is purified through crystallization to pharmaceutical-grade purity.
ALCAR HCl is recognized as a permitted dietary supplement ingredient in the United States and a permitted novel food in several other jurisdictions. It is listed in USP and the European Pharmacopoeia.
The dual mechanism of action (mitochondrial energy production via L-carnitine plus blood-brain barrier penetration enabled by the acetyl group) makes ALCAR HCl particularly valuable in nootropic and cognitive-support positioning.
