01 — Overview

Description

The powdered or standardized extract of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis), the traditional South American stimulant tea consumed throughout Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Contains caffeine and theobromine alongside a distinctive polyphenol profile dominated by chlorogenic acids and saponins. Distinct from black, green, and white tea by botanical species (Ilex paraguariensis versus Camellia sinensis).

Dark green to brown free-flowing powder with characteristic vegetal aroma. Highly water-soluble.

We supply food-grade Yerba Mate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production. Smoked and unsmoked (green) processing variants are available; smoked grades have higher PAH content historically, though modern producers offer flame-free processing options.

Common market grades include Yerba Mate Whole Leaf Powder (the traditional beverage grade), Yerba Mate Spray-Dried Extract (the instant beverage grade), Yerba Mate 10 percent Caffeine Standardized Extract (the energy-supplement grade), Yerba Mate Polyphenol Concentrate (the antioxidant-supplement grade), and Smoke-Free Green Mate (the premium PAH-controlled grade for health-positioned applications).

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering caffeine content (HPLC), theobromine content, total polyphenols, chlorogenic acid content, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, for smoked grades), residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Yerba mate is the traditional stimulant beverage of southern South America with cultivation and consumption dating to pre-Columbian indigenous Guarani populations. The beverage is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, where mate consumption typically exceeds coffee and tea consumption combined on a per-capita basis. Global market expansion since the 1990s has positioned mate as an energy and wellness beverage in North American, European, and East Asian markets.

Industrial production proceeds by traditional processing of harvested leaves and twigs through blanching (sapecado), drying, and aging steps. Smoked grades are produced by direct wood-fire drying, which historically produces higher polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content that has been a regulatory concern in some markets. Modern flame-free processing alternatives produce PAH-controlled grades suitable for premium health-positioned applications.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

Clinical evidence supports weight-management applications at typical doses of 1 to 3 grams per day, with multiple controlled trials demonstrating modest effects on body weight and metabolic markers. Cognitive and energy applications follow from the substantial natural caffeine content (0.7 to 2 percent of dry leaf weight).

Strategic positioning combines traditional South American beverage applications (the dominant volume segment), Western energy and weight-management supplement applications, and emerging premium specialty beverage applications.
