02 — Background

Introduction

White Willow bark has been used as a pain-relief and anti-inflammatory herb since at least ancient Egyptian and Greek times. The active salicin was isolated in the 1820s and led to the development of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) by Bayer chemist Felix Hoffmann in 1897.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried White Willow bark, followed by purification and standardization to defined salicin content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. The European Medicines Agency has issued monographs for White Willow bark as a traditional herbal medicine for minor joint pain.

Salicin is converted in the human body to bha" class="underline" style="color: var(--sage-deep); text-decoration-color: var(--sage-deep);">salicylic acid, the active metabolite responsible for anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The pharmacological action is similar to aspirin but typically with milder gastrointestinal side effects.

Strategic positioning serves the natural pain-relief and anti-inflammatory supplement market specifically, positioned as a botanical alternative to NSAID pharmaceuticals for chronic mild pain management.
