01 — Overview

Description

Streptococcus salivarius is a dominant native member of the healthy human oral microbiome and the leading oral probiotic species worldwide. The commercial strains K12 and M18 produce bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) active against the major pathogens responsible for pharyngitis and dental caries.

Supplied as a freeze-dried powder with viability between 50 and 300 billion CFU per gram at release. Optimized for lozenge, chewable tablet, and oral dispersion formats where direct colonization of oral surfaces is the target.

Off-white to pale cream free-flowing powder with a clean dairy fermentation note. Particle size suitable for lozenge tableting, chewable formats, oral powders, and toothpaste applications.

We supply food-grade Streptococcus salivarius from manufacturers in China holding ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, Halal, Kosher, and other certifications relevant to probiotic strain production.

Common market grades include 50, 100, and 300 billion CFU per gram freeze-dried powders, BLIS-positive K12 and M18 commercial-equivalent strains, lozenge-ready blends with sweetener and disintegrant excipients, and toothpaste-compatible heat-killed (tyndallized) grades. Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments with batch-level COA covering viable count, strain identity, moisture, heavy metals, and pathogen panel.

02 — Background

Introduction

Streptococcus salivarius is one of the first colonizers of the human oral cavity within hours of birth and is the dominant species in healthy oral and pharyngeal microbiota. The BLIS K12 strain was isolated and characterized at the University of Otago in New Zealand and is the foundation of the global oral probiotic category.

Industrial production uses anaerobic or microaerophilic fermentation in proprietary dairy-derived media, with biomass harvest, cryoprotectant blending, and lyophilization to residual moisture below 5 percent. BLIS gene cluster confirmation by PCR is included in identity testing for K12 and M18 commercial-equivalent strains.

Regulatory status includes GRAS notification GRN 461 (for K12) with FDA, recognition under European Union novel food and food supplement frameworks, and acceptance under functional food frameworks in Asia-Pacific markets.

Clinical evidence supports K12 for reduction in streptococcal pharyngitis recurrence and otitis media incidence in children, and M18 for dental plaque and caries marker reduction. Both strains are positioned as flagships in premium oral health probiotic products.
