Description
A short-chain fructooligosaccharide preparation consisting of kestose (DP 3), nystose (DP 4), and fructofuranosyl-nystose (DP 5). Produced enzymatically from sucrose using beta-fructofuranosidase.
White free-flowing powder. Mild sweetness, approximately 35 percent of sucrose. Highly soluble in cold water. Rapidly fermented in the proximal colon.
We supply food-grade Short-Chain FOS from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production. Produced by enzymatic conversion of sucrose from non-GMO sugar.
Common market grades include standard scFOS 95%, syrup form at 75 percent solids, and pre-blended systems combining scFOS with inulin or galactooligosaccharides.
Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering FOS content, free sugars, individual DP fractions, heavy metals, and microbiology.
Introduction
Short-chain FOS was commercialized in Japan during the 1980s by Meiji Seika using enzymatic conversion of sucrose. The product became one of the foundational prebiotic ingredients in functional foods, with regulatory approval and food-for-specified-health-use status established under Japanese FOSHU rules.
The molecule consists of one to three fructose units linked beta(2,1) to a terminal glucose, derived from the sucrose starting material. This structure resists digestion by mammalian enzymes and is selectively fermented by Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in the proximal colon.
Prebiotic efficacy at doses of 2.5 grams to 10 grams daily is well-documented in clinical literature. Gastrointestinal tolerance is good at low doses; flatulence and bloating can occur at single doses above 10 grams in sensitive individuals.
The compound's sweetness, solubility, and clean ingredient declaration support broad food and beverage application, particularly in dairy and functional gummy categories where prebiotic positioning is a key marketing claim.
