Introduction
Poria cocos has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years and is one of the most frequently used herbs in classical formulas. The fungus grows as a hard, dense mass on the roots of pine trees and is harvested as a medicinal sclerotium.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Poria sclerotium, followed by ethanol precipitation of polysaccharides, chromatographic purification, and spray-drying to defined polysaccharide content.
Recognized as a permitted traditional medicine and food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and several other markets.
The active compounds include the beta-glucan pachyman (immunomodulatory) and triterpenoids (poricoic acids, pachymic acid) with diuretic and anti-inflammatory activities. Clinical evidence remains limited but traditional use is well-established with extensive empirical clinical experience in Asian medicine.
Strategic positioning is dominated by traditional Chinese medicine product formulations, with secondary applications in calming and immune-support dietary supplements globally.
