Introduction
Pomegranate has been cultivated for at least 5,000 years across Persia, the Mediterranean, and South Asia. The fruit appears in many ancient texts as a symbol of fertility and abundance. Modern interest in pomegranate as a functional ingredient emerged in the late 1990s following research on cardiovascular and antioxidant effects of pomegranate juice.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried pomegranate rind and seeds (which contain higher punicalagin concentrations than the juice), followed by purification and spray-drying.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.
Punicalagins, the dominant pomegranate polyphenols, are converted by gut bacteria to urolithins, which are absorbed and account for many of the documented biological activities. Clinical evidence supports cardiovascular benefits at appropriate doses, with reasonably consistent effects on blood pressure and endothelial function.
