02 — Background

Introduction

Polygonatum sibiricum (huang jing) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years as a tonifying herb for qi and yin deficiency, with traditional applications in fatigue, weakness, diabetes, and longevity. The plant is among the principal herbs in TCM longevity-positioned formulations.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Polygonatum sibiricum rhizome, followed by filtration, concentration, and spray-drying. Higher-grade polysaccharide preparations require ethanol precipitation and chromatographic purification steps to elevate polysaccharide content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China (where it holds dual food-and-medicine status as one of the herbs designated by the National Health Commission for both medicinal and food use); sold as a botanical dietary supplement in the U.S. and many other markets.

Strategic positioning combines the established Traditional Chinese Medicine product applications (the volume market in China and Asia) with growing Western dietary supplement uptake in energy, blood-glucose, and adaptogen-positioned formulations.
