Description

The standardized extract of Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes), standardized to beta-glucan-cosmetic-grade-oat" class="underline" style="color: var(--sage-deep); text-decoration-color: var(--sage-deep);">beta-glucan content. Contains lentinan, the characteristic immunomodulatory polysaccharide of Shiitake, used in immune-support dietary supplements and as an adjuvant in oncology clinical applications in Japan.

Light brown to brown free-flowing powder with characteristic umami aroma. Highly water-soluble.

02 — Background

Introduction

Shiitake has been cultivated and used as both food and medicine in East Asia for over 1,000 years. The mushroom has emerged as one of the most extensively-studied functional mushroom ingredients globally, with the polysaccharide lentinan approved as a prescription pharmaceutical adjuvant in cancer treatment in Japan since 1985.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Shiitake fruit bodies (the premium feedstock) or mycelium-on-grain biomass (the lower-cost feedstock), followed by ethanol precipitation of polysaccharides, optional ultrafiltration, and spray-drying to defined beta-glucan content. The distinction between fruit-body and mycelium-on-grain extracts is critical for premium positioning, with fruit-body extracts commanding substantial price premiums and lower residual starch content (a marker of mycelium-on-grain contamination).

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

Clinical evidence supports applications in immune support, cardiovascular markers, and as an adjuvant in cancer-treatment protocols (where intravenous lentinan is the approved Japanese protocol). The fruit body extracts have stronger clinical evidence than mycelium-on-grain extracts.
