01 — Overview

Description

A flavonoid-standardized extract from yellow onion skin and bulb (Allium cepa), positioned as a natural-source quercetin alternative to synthetic or Sophora japonica-sourced quercetin. Yellow onion skins are among the highest natural concentrations of quercetin among edible plant materials.

Yellow-brown to brown free-flowing powder. Limited water solubility (quercetin aglycone is hydrophobic); quercetin glycosides are more water-soluble.

Introduction

Quercetin is the most widely distributed flavonoid in human diets, present in onions, apples, capers, berries, tea, and many other plant foods. Yellow onion skin contains exceptional concentrations (up to 2 to 4 percent of dry weight in the outer dry skin), making onion-skin extract an attractive natural-source feedstock for quercetin supplements.

Industrial production proceeds by hydroalcoholic extraction of onion skin and outer-layer material (often a food-industry byproduct), followed by purification, decolorization, and spray-drying. Premium grades use selected raw materials and additional purification.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in most jurisdictions. Quercetin itself is approved for various food and supplement uses by major regulators; onion-source positioning supports clean-label claims.

Strategic positioning targets clean-label and natural-source quercetin supplements where the food-derived provenance commands a price premium over Sophora japonica-sourced material (the conventional volume supply for quercetin).
