Description
An extract from Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), standardized to polysaccharide mucilage content. The mucilage forms a soothing gel-like film on mucous membranes, the mechanistic basis for use in throat-soothing, cough-relief, and digestive-support products.
Light tan to brown free-flowing powder. Highly water-soluble; forms viscous mucilaginous solution on hydration.
We supply food-grade Marshmallow Root Extract from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.
Common market grades include 5:1 and 10:1 herb-to-extract ratios (the workhorse grades), 10 percent Polysaccharides (standardized grade), and 20 percent Polysaccharides (premium grade).
Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering polysaccharide content (UV), herb-to-extract ratio, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiology.
Introduction
Marshmallow has been used as a soothing demulcent herb since ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times. The plant is the historical origin of the marshmallow confection (originally made from the plant's mucilaginous root sap before modern gelatin-based versions). The Latin name Althaea derives from the Greek altho, meaning to cure.
Industrial production proceeds by cold-water extraction of dried Marshmallow roots, which preserves the heat-labile polysaccharide mucilage. The extract is then spray-dried to defined polysaccharide content.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. The European Medicines Agency has issued monographs for Marshmallow root as a traditional herbal medicine for sore throat and mild gastrointestinal complaints.
The polysaccharide mucilage works through direct physical coating of inflamed mucous membranes rather than pharmacological action, making the ingredient relatively well-tolerated with minimal interaction risk.
Strategic positioning serves the throat-soothing and respiratory-support segment specifically, frequently formulated alongside slippery elm bark, licorice root, and honey in throat lozenges and cough syrups.
