Description

Lactobacillus gasseri is a homofermentative species native to the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital microbiota. The species is closely related to L. acidophilus and is one of the dominant native Lactobacillus species in the adult human gut.

Supplied as a freeze-dried powder with viability between 100 and 500 billion CFU per gram at release. Demonstrates strong adhesion to human intestinal epithelial cells and competitive exclusion of enteropathogens through bacteriocin (gassericin) production.

Introduction

Lactobacillus gasseri was first formally described in 1980 and named after the Swiss microbiologist Francois Gasser. Reference strains include ATCC 33323 and the commercial strain SBT2055 developed by Snow Brand Milk Products in Japan and now marketed by Megmilk Snow Brand.

Industrial production uses MRS-based proprietary media under anaerobic conditions, with biomass harvest, cryoprotectant blending, and lyophilization. Heat-killed (tyndallized) grades are produced by controlled thermal inactivation followed by spray drying, preserving cell-wall components and metabolites with documented biological activity.

Regulatory status includes GRAS notifications with FDA for specific strains, Qualified Presumption of Safety listing in the European Union, and acceptance for inclusion in functional foods in Japan under the Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU) framework.
