The amino acid is conditionally essential: normally synthesized in adequate quantities, but becomes essential during catabolic stress including illness, severe exercise, and post-surgical recovery.
Industrial production proceeds by submerged aerobic fermentation using engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum strains.
