Description

A non-essential amino acid with a mild sweet taste, used as a flavor modifier in food, as an ingredient in sports-nutrition supplements, and in pharmaceutical applications including parenteral nutrition.

White crystalline powder. Highly water-soluble. Distinguished from beta-alanine (catalog id 8075) by structure: L-Alanine is the alpha-amino acid; beta-alanine has the amino group on the beta-carbon.

Introduction

L-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that the body produces through transamination from pyruvate. The molecule has the simplest non-hydrogen side chain (methyl group) among proteinogenic amino acids.

Industrial production proceeds by submerged aerobic fermentation using engineered Escherichia coli or Corynebacterium glutamicum strains.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed in BP, USP, EP, and JP pharmacopoeias.

The mild sweet taste of L-Alanine supports specialty food-flavoring applications where conventional sweeteners would interact unfavorably with other formulation components. Use levels in food applications are typically 0.05 to 0.5 percent, providing subtle sweetness modulation without functioning as a primary sweetener.
