Description
The metabolically active form of folate that requires no enzymatic conversion before use by the body. The premium folate form for prenatal and methylation-support supplement positioning, particularly favored by individuals with MTHFR genetic variants.
Off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder. Highly oxidation-sensitive and moisture-sensitive; requires antioxidant stabilization (typically ascorbic acid) and sealed, light-protective packaging.
We supply pharmaceutical-grade and supplement-grade Calcium L-Methylfolate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.
Common market grades include Pharmaceutical Grade (≥ 95 percent L-isomer purity), Supplement Grade (FCC compliant), Stabilized variants with ascorbic acid or glucosamine carrier, and direct-compression granular formats for tableting.
Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, L-isomer ratio, related substances, heavy metals, and microbiology.
Introduction
L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF) is the predominant circulating form of folate in human blood and the active form used directly by cells without the multi-step enzymatic reduction that synthetic folic acid (catalog id 7872) requires.
Industrial production proceeds by chemical synthesis from pteridine intermediates, with chiral resolution to yield the natural L-isomer specifically. The free acid is unstable and is therefore supplied as the calcium salt, with antioxidant co-formulation for shelf stability.
Approved by the U.S. FDA as a Generally Recognized as Safe ingredient and as a New Dietary Ingredient. Approved by EFSA for use in dietary supplements and food fortification with an opinion of substantial equivalence to folic acid for folate-status repletion.
Strategic positioning combines premium supplement applications (where the 'active folate' and 'no conversion required' positioning supports substantial price premium over folic acid) with clinical applications in MTHFR-variant individuals who have impaired ability to reduce synthetic folic acid to the active form.
Patent protection for the calcium salt form expired in major markets between 2019 and 2023, opening the segment to broader generic manufacturing. Chinese manufacturers have rapidly expanded capacity to serve the post-patent supplement market.
