An extract from the dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle, Jamaica flower, karkade), standardized to total anthocyanin content. Used as a natural red colorant, a polyphenolic antioxidant, and a cardiovascular-support supplement ingredient. The principal anthocyanins are delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside.

Introduction
Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) is a tropical and subtropical species cultivated for its fleshy calyces, which are dried and used worldwide in herbal teas (karkade in North Africa, agua de jamaica in Mexico, sorrel in the Caribbean). The dried calyx contains a characteristic combination of anthocyanins, organic acids, and polyphenols supporting both color and functional applications.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried hibiscus calyces, followed by concentration and spray-drying. Color-grade material is standardized to color value; functional-grade material is standardized to anthocyanin content.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient and natural color in essentially all jurisdictions. The dried calyx is a long-established beverage and culinary ingredient.
Clinical evidence for blood-pressure lowering is moderately strong, with multiple randomized controlled trials supporting meaningful effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure at doses of 1.5 to 3 grams dried hibiscus per day or equivalent extract.
