Introduction
Dong Quai has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years as one of the most important herbs for women's health, blood tonification, and menstrual regulation. The herb is sometimes called the female ginseng in Western herbal literature.
Industrial production proceeds by ethanol and hot-water extraction of dried Dong Quai roots, followed by purification and standardization to defined ligustilide or ferulic acid content.
Recognized as a permitted traditional medicine and food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and many other markets; restricted as a herbal medicine in some European markets pending Novel Food review.
The active compounds include phthalide derivatives (ligustilide and related compounds), ferulic acid, and immunomodulatory polysaccharides. Clinical evidence for menopause-support and women's-health applications is mixed but supports continued traditional use.
Strategic positioning is dominated by women's-health dietary supplements globally and Traditional Chinese Medicine product formulations in Asian markets.
