A semi-synthetic flavone glycoside derived from the citrus flavonoid hesperidin. Used in venotonic and venoprotective pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements, principally for chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoid management.
Pale yellow to light grey-yellow free-flowing powder. Very limited water solubility; micronized forms are used in pharmaceutical applications to improve absorption.

Introduction
Diosmin was first isolated from Scrophularia nodosa in 1925 and has been used clinically since the 1970s for venous insufficiency. The compound is industrially produced by extracting hesperidin from citrus peel (principally orange peel byproducts from the juice industry) and then converting hesperidin to diosmin through alkaline dehydrogenation.
Industrial production proceeds by hesperidin extraction from dried orange peels, alkaline dehydrogenation using iodine in pyridine or alternative reagents, and recrystallization to defined purity. Micronization to particle sizes below 2 microns is applied for pharmaceutical-grade material to improve absorption.
Listed in the European Pharmacopoeia and used as a prescription pharmaceutical active in many European, Latin American, and Asian markets. The U.S. market treats Diosmin primarily as a dietary supplement ingredient.
Clinical evidence for venotonic and venoprotective applications is among the strongest for any flavonoid pharmaceutical, supported by multiple controlled trials and meta-analyses in chronic venous insufficiency and acute hemorrhoidal episodes.
