02 — Background

Introduction

Bupleurum (chai hu) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years as a liver-qi-regulating and harmonizing herb. The root appears in numerous classical formulas including Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), one of the most-prescribed formulas in TCM history.

Industrial production proceeds by ethanol or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Bupleurum roots, followed by purification and standardization to defined saikosaponin content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China and many Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and most other markets.

Saikosaponins A and D are the principal active triterpenoid saponins with documented hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities. The compound class is the basis for both supplement standardization and pharmaceutical research into hepatitis support.

Strategic positioning combines Traditional Chinese Medicine formula applications (the dominant volume use) with modern liver-support and stress-management supplements in Western markets.
