Description

The standardized extract of Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit, principally standardized to piperine content. Piperine is the pungent alkaloid responsible for the characteristic heat of black pepper and the primary bioavailability-enhancing compound used in modern dietary supplement formulations, particularly for curcumin absorption.

Off-white to pale yellow free-flowing powder. Limited water solubility; freely soluble in alcohol, ether, and chloroform.

Introduction

Black Pepper has been a globally traded spice for over 4,000 years, with documented Indian cultivation and Egyptian use. The compound piperine was isolated in 1819 by Hans Christian Orsted and has been pharmacologically characterized as a potent inhibitor of intestinal and hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes (P-glycoprotein and selected cytochrome P450s), the mechanistic basis for its bioavailability-enhancement positioning.

Industrial production proceeds by extraction of dried Black Pepper fruit with food-grade solvents, followed by purification and crystallization to defined piperine content. Premium pharmaceutical-grade material is produced through multiple recrystallization passes.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient and spice extract by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.
