Introduction
Bitter Melon is a tropical vine cultivated across Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean for both food and medicine. The fruit has been used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries for blood-sugar management and digestive complaints.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Bitter Melon fruit, followed by purification and standardization to defined charantin content. Charantin is a mixture of two steroidal saponins (β-sitosteryl glucoside and 5,25-stigmastadien-3β-ol-glucoside) traditionally identified as the principal hypoglycemic active.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.
Clinical evidence for Bitter Melon supplementation in type 2 diabetes management is mixed but generally supports modest glucose-lowering effects at sufficiently high doses (typically 2 to 6 grams of extract per day). The compound is among the most extensively used botanical glucose-management ingredients in Asian and South Asian markets.
Strategic positioning targets the blood-sugar-management and diabetes-support dietary supplement segments, with strong established markets in Asia, South Asia, and the Asian diaspora communities globally.
