01 — Overview

Description

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis is the most specialized human milk oligosaccharide utilizer in the human microbiome and the dominant member of the breastfed-infant gut at the species level. The subspecies is foundational to infant probiotic and synbiotic positioning.

Supplied as a freeze-dried powder with viability between 100 and 500 billion CFU per gram at release. Exhibits the broadest known HMO utilization gene cluster among intestinal bacteria, supporting its dominance in the breastfed infant colon.

Off-white to pale beige free-flowing powder with a faintly fermented note. Particle size suitable for infant drops, oil suspensions, pediatric sachets, and adult capsule applications.

We supply food-grade Bifidobacterium infantis from manufacturers in China holding ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, Halal, Kosher, and other certifications relevant to probiotic strain production.

Common market grades include 100, 200, and 500 billion CFU per gram freeze-dried powders, infant-formula-qualified grades, oil-suspension formats for infant drops, and adult capsule grades for irritable bowel syndrome positioning. Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments with batch-level COA covering viable count, strain identity, moisture, heavy metals, and pathogen panel.

02 — Background

Introduction

Bifidobacterium infantis was originally classified as a separate species and later reclassified as a subspecies of B. longum on the basis of DNA-DNA hybridization and whole-genome analysis. The reference strain ATCC 15697 and the commercial strain 35624 (held by Procter and Gamble and licensed for the Align brand) are widely used.

Industrial production requires strict anaerobic conditions, cysteine and reducing-agent supplemented media, and oxygen-protected downstream processing. Biomass is recovered under nitrogen, cryoprotected, and lyophilized to residual moisture below 4 percent. Oxygen-impermeable packaging is essential for shelf life retention.

Regulatory status includes GRAS notifications with FDA, Qualified Presumption of Safety listing in the European Union, and approval for infant formula use in major regulatory regions. The strain 35624 holds specific GRAS notification covering adult dietary supplement applications.

Clinical evidence supports use in preterm infant gut development and necrotizing enterocolitis prevention (in combination with B. breve), adult irritable bowel syndrome symptom relief (strain 35624), and overall breastfed-infant gut microbiome composition.
