01 — Overview

Description

Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming lactic-acid-producing bacterium that combines the gastrointestinal benefits of a Lactobacillus with the heat and acid stability of a Bacillus spore. The species is the dominant choice for room-temperature probiotic functional foods.

Supplied as a spray-dried spore powder with viable spore count between 25 and 300 billion CFU per gram at release. Spores survive baking, extrusion, pasteurization, and gastric acid, then germinate in the small intestine to deliver active probiotic effect.

Off-white to pale beige free-flowing powder with a neutral odor. Particle size suitable for tablet compression, capsule filling, baked goods, and beverage applications.

We supply food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade Bacillus coagulans from manufacturers in China holding ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, Halal, Kosher, and other certifications relevant to spore probiotic production.

Common market grades include 25, 50, 100, and 300 billion CFU per gram spray-dried spore powders. Reference commercial strains include GBI-30 6086 (Ganeden BC30, ATCC PTA-6086), MTCC 5856 (LactoSpore), and SNZ 1969 (Unique IS-2). Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments with batch-level COA covering viable spore count, strain identity, moisture, heavy metals, and pathogen panel.

02 — Background

Introduction

Bacillus coagulans was originally isolated from spoiled canned milk in 1915 by L.M. Hammer at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. The dominant commercial strain GBI-30 6086 was developed by Ganeden Biotech (now part of Kerry) and is deposited at ATCC under accession PTA-6086.

Industrial production uses aerobic submerged fermentation in defined media, with sporulation triggered by nutrient limitation. Spores are recovered, washed, and spray-dried, yielding a stable shelf-stable powder. Activity is measured as viable spore count by heat-treatment-resistant plate count, distinguishing dormant spores from vegetative cells.

Regulatory status is favorable. GBI-30 6086 holds GRAS status with FDA (GRN 227 and 660) for use in functional foods and beverages. EFSA has issued favorable opinions on safety, although Qualified Presumption of Safety status is restricted to non-toxigenic strains. The species is approved as a feed additive under EU Regulation 1831/2003 for several strains.

Clinical evidence supports use for IBS symptom relief, postprandial gas reduction, joint health (in conjunction with anti-inflammatory mechanisms), and immune support. Spore stability enables claims and use levels that conventional probiotics cannot match in baked goods, beverages, and other thermally processed products.

B. coagulans has become the leading probiotic species for the functional food and beverage segment, capturing significant market share from traditional Lactobacillus-led capsule formulations in the broader probiotic category.
