Introduction
Tongkat Ali (also known as pasak bumi, long jack, or Malaysian ginseng) has been used in traditional Southeast Asian medicine for centuries for male fertility, energy, and vitality. The plant grows wild and is increasingly cultivated in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Tongkat Ali roots, followed by purification and standardization. Higher-grade extracts use additional ultrafiltration to remove very-high-molecular-weight components that may produce gastrointestinal effects.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in most jurisdictions; subject to regulatory review in the EU under the Novel Food regulation.
Clinical evidence for Tongkat Ali supplementation in men with low or borderline testosterone is among the more robust for botanical testosterone-support ingredients, with multiple controlled trials showing modest testosterone elevation, improved libido, and improved subjective vitality. Effects in healthy men with normal testosterone levels are smaller.
