02 — Background

Introduction

Rhodiola rosea has been used in traditional Scandinavian, Siberian, and Tibetan medicine for centuries to combat fatigue, enhance endurance, and improve mood. The plant is one of the most-studied adaptogenic herbs in Western clinical research, with substantial evidence supporting stress-management and mental-performance applications.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Rhodiola roots, followed by chromatographic purification and standardization. Identity verification by DNA testing or chromatographic fingerprinting is increasingly important commercially due to occasional adulteration with related Rhodiola species.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. The European Medicines Agency has issued monographs for Rhodiola as a traditional herbal medicine for stress, fatigue, and mild anxiety.

Clinical evidence supports use in stress-related fatigue, mild burnout, and mental-performance under conditions of stress at 200 to 600 mg daily doses of standardized extract.

Strategic positioning is the leading adaptogen-positioned supplement globally, alongside ashwagandha, with substantial commercial growth driven by consumer demand for natural stress-management products.
