The natural insecticide extracted from Pyrethrum daisy flowers (Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium, also Tanacetum cinerariifolium). Contains six related insecticidal compounds collectively called pyrethrins. Introduction
Pyrethrum has been used as a natural insecticide since at least 1800 in Persian and Caucasian traditional pest control. The active pyrethrins were chemically characterized in the 1920s through 1940s, leading to the development of synthetic pyrethroids (permethrin, deltamethrin, cypermethrin) that are now more widely used due to extended environmental persistence.
Industrial production proceeds by solvent extraction of dried Pyrethrum daisy flowers, followed by purification to yield the pyrethrin-rich concentrate. The major production regions are Kenya, Tanzania, and Australia, with growing Chinese production capacity.
Approved for use in agriculture and pest control by the U.S. EPA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Specifically approved for USDA Organic and EU Organic farming as one of the few permitted natural insecticides.
The compound's defining environmental property is rapid photodegradation, which limits both pest control persistence (necessitating frequent reapplication) and environmental impact (pyrethrum residues are essentially absent within hours to days of application). This makes it the preferred insecticide for applications where chemical-residue minimization is required.
